Breast Screening

Mammography (taking x-rays of breast tissue) is organised from outside the practice.

Screening takes place every 3 years in women aged 50-70. The Department of Health does not currently fund the routine screening of women below the age of 50 (effectively pre-menopausal women). Screening is difficult in women who still have periods because the breast tissue changes with the monthly cycle. Nevertheless, it does advocate screening women who have a first degree relative who has had breast cancer (i.e. mother or a sister) from 5 years before the age at which the relative was diagnosed.

Quit 51

Quit 51 is avaliable by telephone consultations only. Free Advice and support is given from NHS Professionals to help you stop smoking. Nicotine replacement such as Patches, Gum, Champix and Zyban can be given free if you are exempt from prescription charges. One in two smokers that use this service quit smoking.

Medicals

Medical examinations for insurance policies, HGV or PSV drivers, elderly drivers, sub-aqua purposes etc, can be arranged by appointment. As these invariably do not come under your doctor's terms of NHS service, a fee will be charged. Please ring reception and we will do our best to arrange this for you.

Medical forms

The doctors are able to complete forms on your behalf or perform medicals, such as Heavy Goods Vehicle, Taxi, Insurance and Bus driver's medicals. They are not included in that list of tasks carried out by a Doctor for the NHS. These services therefore carry a charge, please ask at reception. Common forms that are completed are:

  • Holiday cancellation forms
  • Driving Licence applications with photographs
  • Passport applications
  • Insurance Claims
  • Private sick note
  • Blue Badge application forms - please make sure you enclose your photograph, envelope and payment as these will be sent off directly from the practice for you.

If you wish to make an appointment for a medical, please telephone reception.

If you want a form completed, please leave it at reception, with THE REST OF THE FORM FULLY COMPLETED. The doctors have a busy time and form completion is not high on the list. Please leave at least seven days before collecting the form.

Minor surgery

Dr Nigel Benton has recently started a Minor Surgery clinic. He undertakes various minor surgical procedures at Newbold Verdon Medical Practice, for patients who are registered at Newbold Verdon or Market Bosworth. In the first instance please book a routine appointment with Dr Benton to discuss this. Dr Benton is assisted by Emma Nadin, one of our Practice Nurses.

Contraception

There are many methods available to avoid pregnancy, from simple barrier methods such as condoms and caps, to pills, patches, injections, coils and sterilisation.

Please visit these websites for more information www.fpa.org.uk and www.ypsh.net

For details about how, when and where to get your contraception organised locally see below:

  • Emergency Contraception ("the morning after pill") can be used up to 72 hours after unprotected sex, and is available to buy at pharmacies, but can be prescribed for free at the surgery - contact reception as usual.
  • The Practice Nurses are available for family planning appointments to discuss your needs, carry out pill checks and issue repeat prescriptions.
  • All our doctors can discuss contraception with you in a routine face-face appointment. Dr Morris is able to fit and change implants and Dr Spaul is able to fit coils. Please make a routine appointment with either of these GP's if this is something you would like to discuss. They will not do these procedures on a same-day appointment.

Minor Injury

As you may be aware Accident & Emergency departments are currently triaging patients who arrive to ascertain whether their illness or injury needs to be treated in A&E or could have been dealt with by their GP. If they do not feel you need to be seen in A&E they will ask you to come back and attend your GP Practice. If you are unsure please telephone us before attending A&E as this may well save you a journey.

We are able to deal with a number of minor injuries including head injuries, lacerations (these can be stitched in the practice if necessary), sports injuries, strains and sprains, abdominal pain, pregnancy related issues, urine infections and many more.
