Breast Screening

Mammography (taking x-rays of breast tissue) is organised from outside the practice.

Screening takes place every 3 years in women aged 50-70. The Department of Health does not currently fund the routine screening of women below the age of 50 (effectively pre-menopausal women). Screening is difficult in women who still have periods because the breast tissue changes with the monthly cycle. Nevertheless, it does advocate screening women who have a first degree relative who has had breast cancer (i.e. mother or a sister) from 5 years before the age at which the relative was diagnosed.

Contraception

There are many methods available to avoid pregnancy, from simple barrier methods such as condoms and caps, to pills, patches, injections, coils and sterilisation.

Please visit these websites for more information www.fpa.org.uk and www.ypsh.net

For details about how, when and where to get your contraception organised locally see below:

  • Emergency Contraception ("the morning after pill") can be used up to 72 hours after unprotected sex, and is available to buy at pharmacies, but can be prescribed for free at the surgery - contact reception as usual.
  • The Practice Nurses are available for family planning appointments to discuss your needs, carry out pill checks and issue repeat prescriptions.
  • All our doctors can discuss contraception with you in a routine face-face appointment. Dr Morris is able to fit and change implants and Dr Spaul is able to fit coils. Please make a routine appointment with either of these GP's if this is something you would like to discuss. They will not do these procedures on a same-day appointment.

Medicals

Medical examinations for insurance policies, HGV or PSV drivers, elderly drivers, sub-aqua purposes etc, can be arranged by appointment. As these invariably do not come under your doctor's terms of NHS service, a fee will be charged. Please ring reception and we will do our best to arrange this for you.

Minor Injury

As you may be aware Accident & Emergency departments are currently triaging patients who arrive to ascertain whether their illness or injury needs to be treated in A&E or could have been dealt with by their GP. If they do not feel you need to be seen in A&E they will ask you to come back and attend your GP Practice. If you are unsure please telephone us before attending A&E as this may well save you a journey.

We are able to deal with a number of minor injuries including head injuries, lacerations (these can be stitched in the practice if necessary), sports injuries, strains and sprains, abdominal pain, pregnancy related issues, urine infections and many more.
